About the position The Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness (CHECW) seeks to eliminate racial and other inequities resulting in premature mortality. With an unwavering grounding in history and structural analysis, CHECW works to increase visibility of the harm perpetuated by centuries of racist, socially unjust policy while pushing towards redress for the most impacted NYC communities. CHECW addresses inequity across community and healthcare systems in partnership with community, faith-based, and health care organizations. CHECW's work focuses on social determinants of health, including environmental and commercial determinants, and addresses both upstream and downstream factors to improve health and well-being of New Yorkers. CHECW is comprised of the Bureau of Bronx Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Brooklyn Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Harlem Neighborhood Health, the Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention, the Bureau of Health Equity Capacity Building, the Bureau of Equitable Health Systems and the Bureau of Finance, Administration and Services. The division's Deputy Commissioner also serves as the Agency's Chief Medical Officer. The Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention (BCDP) works to eliminate racial inequities and reduce overall premature mortality by tracking big tobacco, big salt, big sugar and other commercial determinants of health. As part of prevention and wellness promotion, BCDP employs evidence-based policies, programs, communications, and research to advance its objectives as well as spearheads and evaluates innovative projects to develop new approaches to addressing chronic disease. The bureau supports work spanning Tobacco Policy and Programs, Healthy Eating Initiatives, Active Design, Public Health Detailing, Cancer Prevention and Control Program and the Hypertension Initiative. The Bureau sits within the Center for Health Equity and Community Wellness. The Bureau is looking to hire a Chronic Disease Data Analyst who will play an integral role supporting research and program evaluation activities aimed at reducing the burden of chronic disease in New York City. Responsibilities • Provide analytic support to Bureau Units, including responding to data requests in a timely manner, and/or assisting in the design of research and evaluation activities. • Work with Research & Evaluation unit staff to perform core unit activities including surveillance, data management and analysis, preparation of summary tables, figures, and maps related to chronic disease. • Clearly and systematically documenting analytic processes (codebooks, SAS programs, etc.). • Synthesize and summarize peer-reviewed literature on topics related to chronic disease prevention as needed. • Draft reports and presentations for internal and external audiences; leading and/or assisting the drafting and submission of peer-reviewed articles. • Provide data and data interpretation of other Bureau-created external documents and presentations. Requirements • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health. • A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or • A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to '1' or '2' above. However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in '2' above. Nice-to-haves • Experience in quantitative analytical methods; some familiarity with qualitative methods. • Experience using statistical software (SAS, SQL, other). • Experience with data visualization and communication (both verbal and written). • Ability to manage quantitative datasets. • Comfort with managing multiple tasks and tracking progress to adhere to set timelines. • A work style incorporating high levels of organization, excellent attention to detail, and a focus on solutions. • Familiarity with peer-reviewed literature on chronic disease prevention, health equity and strategies to eliminate racial disparities in health outcomes.
