About this Role The Director of Agricultural Policy will spearhead Environmental Defense Fund’s initiative to develop and implement innovative agricultural policies aimed at reducing environmental impacts. The role involves leading efforts to manage the effects of agriculture on air, land, water, and climate both in the United States and globally. This pivotal position will strengthen EDF’s leadership in agricultural policy, drive global strategies, and ensure effective teamwork and management across the organization and with crucial partners. The director will work closely with the Climate-Smart Agriculture team and report to the Vice President of Climate-Smart Agriculture. Key tasks will include collaboration with stakeholders to devise strategies, strengthen management, and align economic incentives with environmental health goals. The role is instrumental in advancing EDF’s mission through strategic planning, policy advocacy, and partnership cultivation. Responsibilities • Lead the development of strategies and workplans for agricultural policy with a specific focus on cropland and fertilizer use. • Partner with leadership and development teams to engage donors and generate funds. • Identify and address emerging agriculture issues, develop strategic solutions. • Manage and motivate teams, prioritize their professional development. • Serve as authority and spokesperson on agricultural policy issues. • Lead fundraising efforts, including drafting proposals and maintaining donor relationships. • Coordinate with staff and partners to align execution with organizational goals. • Proactively manage risks and ensure compliance with organizational policies. • Guide and oversee agricultural research initiatives. • Cultivate partnerships across various sectors to expand EDF’s reach and impact. Requirements • 10+ years of relevant experience; a bachelor’s degree required, a master’s degree may substitute for up to two years of experience. • Expertise in agriculture and fertilizer use. • Proven experience leading strategic programs and managing projects. • Strong organizational, communication, and project management skills. • Ability to build relationships with governmental, academic, nonprofit, and community stakeholders. • Proactive, self-aware, and culturally competent.
