Director, Fiber Optic Network Design

Position Overview: The Director of Fiber Optic Network Design is the leader responsible for master planning the fiber optic network pathways throughout the Tract Data Center Campuses. The Director is fully accountable for the final design content, documentation and implementation to support the physical fiber pathway infrastructure supporting outside plant communications facilities throughout Tract 's multi thousand-acre master planned data center campuses. The Director of Fiber Optic Network Design will actively collaborate with the Director, Network Planning and Acquisition to bring commercial long haul and metro networks to Interconnection points within the Tract Data Center Campuses. Experience Qualifications: The successful candidate will have experience and practical expertise in the following: Fiber Optic Fundamentals: Good understanding of the physics behind fiber optics, including the principles of light transmission, attenuation, and dispersion in single-mode fibers. Knowledge of optical signal types (e.g., DWDM, CWDM) and the technologies used to multiplex data streams over the same fiber. Awareness of factors that affect fiber performance, like temperature sensitivity and physical stresses (bending, pulling) on fiber strands. Network Design and Topology Planning: Expertise in designing high-capacity, reliable fiber networks that meet both current and future bandwidth demands. Ability to evaluate different topologies, including point-to-point, ring, and mesh configurations, based on redundancy, failover capabilities, and latency requirements. Familiarity with infrastructure planning to ensure route diversity and avoid potential single points of failure. Fiber Standards and Compliance: Knowledge of industry standards from organizations like ITU-T (International Telecommunication Union), ANSI/TIA (Telecommunications Industry Association), and IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). Familiarity with guidelines on fiber performance, bandwidth specifications, and safety codes that ensure compatibility across different providers and equipment. Hands-on Technical Skills: Familiarity in using equipment for fiber optic splicing, termination, and testing, such as fusion splicers, OTDR (Optical Time Domain Reflectometers), and power meters. Troubleshooting skills for identifying issues in fiber connections and solving physical layer problems such as signal loss and fiber breaks. Familiarity with fiber cable installation techniques, including conduit placement, aerial installation, and underground trenching. Project Management: Expertise in coordinating large-scale deployment projects, including timelines, milestones, and resource allocation for installing fiber optic infrastructure. Ability to manage cross-functional teams, including coordinating with civil engineers, construction teams, and municipal authorities for route planning. Health and Safety Standards: Familiarity with OSHA and other health and safety standards to ensure that fiber optic installation work complies with industry standards. Understanding of environmental and safety regulations, such as handling of hazardous materials, protection of sensitive natural areas, and managing community impact. Budgeting and Cost Analysis: Proficient in conducting detailed cost analysis and budget forecasting for fiber optic pathway acquisition and deployment, including labor, materials, permits, and operational costs. Network Management and Mapping Software: Familiarity with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) or other mapping software for planning routes and visualizing network layouts. Database and Documentation Platforms: Proficiency with platforms like Microsoft Excel, Access, or SQL databases to maintain inventory of fiber assets, locations, and usage. Knowledge of document management software to securely store and organize contracts, compliance documents, and engineering drawings. Baseline Requirements: Education, Professional Certification, and Licenses: B.S In Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related technical field of study. Experience: 7 to 15 years or more of detailed network design and topology planning Travel: Travel will be to various project sites from time to time and to meet with owners engineering and construction teams as well as company headquarters.
