District 9 Legislative Aide - Policy Analyst

About the position This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated public policy professional to contribute to meaningful local government work and serve the residents of King County District 9. The Metropolitan King County Council governs the second-largest county government in Washington State, serving over 2.25 million residents. Nine councilmembers represent both urban and unincorporated communities, providing leadership on services such as public health, transit, wastewater treatment, solid waste, human services, and criminal justice. Councilmember Reagan Dunn represents District 9 (D9), which includes more than 80,000 unincorporated residents and the cities and surrounding areas of Bellevue, Newcastle, Renton, Maple Valley, Covington, Black Diamond, and Enumclaw. D9 also encompasses the Muckleshoot Indian Reservation. You will join a small, collaborative team of 4-5 people, including Councilmember Dunn and his staff. Councilmember Dunn seeks a highly organized, detail-oriented, and proactive Legislative Aide I to serve as a policy analyst, constituent liaison, and general support staff for the D9 office. Working closely with the Councilmember and Chief of Staff, the Legislative Aide I conducts policy research, drafts briefing materials, tracks committee work, and handles constituent casework within assigned issue areas. A successful candidate demonstrates excellent communication, sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. The position reports directly to the Chief of Staff. Responsibilities • Research, analyze, and monitor policies and legislation affecting District 9 and King County. • Work with assigned committees, identify key issues, develop policy responses, and collaborate with relevant stakeholders. • Interpret policy, track legislation, develop supporting materials, and work with central staff to draft legislation. • Prepare clear, concise written reports, memos, and correspondence. • Handle constituent casework and provide responsive, solutions-oriented service. • Serve as lead staff for at least one legislative or policy focus area. • Cultivate strong relationships with King County Executive and Legislative staff, and community partners. • Support other duties as needed to ensure the effective operations of the office, executives and organization. • Plan and coordinate internal and external events and meetings Requirements • Bachelor's degree and two years of related experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. • Strong understanding of local, state, and/or federal legislative processes. • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills. • Proven ability to research, analyze, and synthesize policy information. • High level of professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment. • Strong organizational and multitasking skills. • Ability to work collaboratively and creatively to solve problems. • Commitment to excellent constituent service. • Ability to handle shifting priorities, frequent changes, and show grace under pressure.
