Job Summary We are seeking an experienced and compassionate tutor to join our team at Sylvan Learning Centers of Rockford & Grand Rapids. As a tutor, you will play a vital role in creating a positive and engaging learning experience for our students, using our proven program materials to drive academic success. Key Responsibilities Preparation and Instruction : Prepare for each instructional session by gathering and preparing materials as needed. Greet students and initiate instruction to personally engage each student, and instruct students according to the design of the Sylvan programs. Student Management : Manage students, tasks, and time to create a balanced and robust instructional session, evaluating and recording the progress of each student on their program assignment. Encouragement and Motivation : Use praise and encouragement to ensure students are engaged and inspired to learn, motivating students with Sylvan tokens given for specific achievements according to the Sylvan instructional management standards. Communication and Collaboration : Communicate specific student needs to Center staff, attend periodic staff meetings, and complete ongoing training as needed to ensure student success. Record-Keeping and Safety : Manage the conclusion of each instructional session, record and track tokens earned by students, and support procedures to ensure student safety and well-being. Essential Qualifications To be successful in this role, you will need to possess the following essential qualifications: Language Arts and Study Skills Program Teachers : A four-year degree or equivalent is required, with state or provincial teaching credentials preferred (current or expired). A minimum of one or two years of teaching experience is preferred, with knowledge of phonics and reading comprehension preferred for reading teachers. Math Program Teachers : A four-year degree is required in a discipline requiring 3 or more years of college-level math, such as SAT/ACT, Test Prep, and Advanced Reading Skills Teachers. Preferred Qualifications In addition to the essential qualifications, we prefer candidates with the following skills and experience: Teaching Experience : A minimum of one or two years of teaching experience is preferred. Subject Matter Expertise : Knowledge of phonics and reading comprehension is preferred for reading teachers, and a four-year degree or equivalent is preferred for math and test prep teachers.
