Experienced Data Engineer for American Express – Cloud-Based Data Processing and Insights Development

We are now seeking an experienced Data Engineer to join our team and contribute to the design, development, and implementation of our cloud-based data processing and insights systems. About the Role As a Data Engineer at American Express, you will be responsible for building core features and components of our card transaction systems on a distributed platform deployed in a hybrid cloud environment. You will work closely with our team of talented engineers in an open, collaborative, and inclusive environment where your voice is valued, and you have the autonomy to make technical decisions. Your primary focus will be on designing and building distributed data processing and analytics systems, constructing high-level designs, and coding features that meet our performance and scalability requirements. Key Responsibilities Design and build distributed data processing and analytics systems, focusing on performant code and scalability Construct high-level designs and detailed plans of subsystems and features, collaborating with engineers in daily activities and contributing to code and SDLC tasks Build proof-of-concepts to validate new ideas and technologies, staying up-to-date with industry-leading innovations and solutions Lead a culture of innovation and experimentation, participating in a fun and results-oriented culture, and being open to trying new ideas without fear of failure Collaborate with peer technology and development teams across various locations, fostering a spirit of cooperation and knowledge-sharing Essential Qualifications To be successful in this role, you should have: 2+ years of work experience in software design and implementation using Java or Scala Experience in data processing using Flash, as well as knowledge of planning, implementing, and operating NoSQL databases like Cassandra, Elasticsearch A strong understanding of computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and software design patterns Excellent problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex problems and develop creative solutions Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a team environment Preferred Qualifications In addition to the essential qualifications, we prefer candidates with: Experience in distributed data processing and analytics using Cassandra, Elasticsearch, Flash Experience in distributed messaging systems like Kafka, as well as building microservices and service mesh Experience in cloud platforms like Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, and continuous integration, continuous delivery, and DevOps frameworks Experience in architecting large-scale distributed data systems, considering scalability, reliability, security, performance, and flexibility A clear understanding of different design patterns, threading, and memory models supported by the language/VM Ability to mentor and provide technical guidance to other engineers, with excellent written and verbal communication skills Career Growth Opportunities and Learning Benefits At American Express, we are committed to the growth and development of our employees.
