About the Role As a Distributed Systems Engineer at blithequark, you'll be part of our Data Platform team, which empowers our organization to make data-driven decisions. Our team provides unified data platforms and tools for various business functions, making it easier for our colleagues to work with data efficiently, safely, and effectively. We're looking for skilled engineers to help us develop and enhance our infrastructure as we strive to reach 500 million people worldwide. Key Responsibilities Design, develop, and maintain large-scale distributed systems that meet the evolving needs of our business. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including engineers, product managers, and technical program managers, to drive projects forward. Build robust, scalable, and highly available distributed infrastructure that can handle the demands of our growing user base. Contribute to the open-source community and share our experiences with the world. Participate in the development of our data platform, including database access, big data processing, and data pipeline management. Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues, ensuring high availability and performance of our systems. Focus Areas within Data Platform Teams Our Data Platform team is divided into several focus areas, each with its unique challenges and opportunities: Database Access Platform This team builds and operates a flexible query gateway that enables data abstractions to work at sub-millisecond latencies, allowing Netflix microservices to store, consume, and manage their data more efficiently. Data Platform Infrastructure This team acts as a platform for our own data platforms, building high-impact system, control, and deployment frameworks that are tailored to the needs of running our data systems at scale. Big Data Compute Responsible for providing a cloud-native platform for distributed data processing, this team is crucial to batch data processing in the Data Platform. It offers support for various data processing frameworks and provides sub-second latency for certain classes of queries. Big Data Orchestration This team provides a platform for designing, orchestrating, and executing big data jobs and workflows in a self-serve manner. These platforms include critical services that run all ETL and ML workloads on Big Data Frameworks at blithequark. Essential Qualifications 2+ years of experience in building large-scale distributed systems features or applications. Proficiency in designing and developing scalable web services. Experience in building and operating scalable, fault-tolerant, distributed systems. Knowledge of Java or other object-oriented programming languages. Comfortable with multi-threading and concurrency. BS in Computer Science or a related field. Preferred Qualifications Experience with distributed database systems, data processing frameworks, and data pipeline management. Familiarity with open-source technologies and contributions to open-source projects. Strong understanding of software engineering principles, including testing, debugging, and version control. Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
