Key Responsibilities Work cooperatively with teachers and staff to support the educational and behavioral needs of students with special needs. Assist in the development and implementation of individualized education plans (IEPs) and behavioral intervention plans. Provide one-on-one support to students, reinforcing skills taught by the teacher in basic language, mathematics, reading, and social skills. Monitor student progress, providing immediate re-teaching and reinforcement as needed. Assist with classroom management, including supervising independent student study and maintaining a safe and organized learning environment. Participate in professional development activities to enhance knowledge and skills in supporting students with special needs. Collaborate with teachers to prepare materials, correct work, and display student projects. Accompany small groups of students to and from various locations within the school, ensuring their safety and well-being. Assist with physical activities, such as playground supervision and coaching physical skills that strengthen large motor skills. Demonstrate understanding of students' disabilities, maintaining a firm and courteous demeanor. Perform other duties as assigned, including assisting with bus loading, lunch supervision, and recess duty. Essential Qualifications To be successful in this role, you should possess: Ability to operate a computer and related software, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Experience working with students with special needs, including those with diverse disabilities. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with teachers, staff, and students. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion. Physical ability to lift and move up to 35 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds, as well as stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl as needed. Preferred Qualifications While not required, the following qualifications are highly desirable: Previous experience as a Special Education Teacher Assistant or related role. Knowledge of special education laws and regulations, including IDEA and Section 504. Training in crisis intervention, behavioral management, or a related area. Ability to communicate in a language other than English. Skills and Competencies To excel in this role, you'll need: Compassion and empathy when working with students with special needs.
