Job Overview As a Long-Term Substitute Special Education Teacher, you will be responsible for providing classroom coverage for a certified staff member who is absent for an extended period. Your primary goal will be to provide students with appropriate supervision, learning activities, and experiences in the academic area assigned, helping them fulfill their potential intellectual, emotional, physical, and social growth. Key Responsibilities Assume all responsibilities and duties assigned to the absent certified staff member, including presenting lessons as outlined and described in materials prepared by the absent teacher. Execute all necessary planning, organization, student evaluation, and grade reporting, maintaining the established routines and procedures of the school and classrooms. Supervise and account for students in and out of classroom activities during the working day, developing rapport with students and serving as a positive role model. Evaluate student academic and social growth, keeping appropriate records, preparing progress reports, and communicating with parents through conferences and other means to discuss student progress and interpret the school program. Implement appropriate instructional and learning strategies, activities, materials, and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of students assigned. Manage student behavior in accordance with District policies and procedures, taking necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Identify student needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve learning, health, and behavior problems. Create an effective environment for learning by utilizing classroom technology when appropriate, upholding computer technology acceptable use policies, and reporting to the building principal or their designee to share issues or concerns. Essential Qualifications To be considered for this exciting opportunity, you must possess a valid Illinois Professional Educator License or Substitute Teaching License. You should have a strong knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and classroom management, as well as the ability to develop a quick rapport with students, building staff, and administration. Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills are essential, along with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both written and verbal. Preferred Qualifications Prior experience teaching in the subject area of the assigned classroom is highly desirable, as is proficiency in using Google Suite and student information systems. You should be able to maintain a professional appearance and perform non-medical duties, such as hygiene, diapering, feeding with or without accommodations, if needed. A strong understanding of best practices and requirements as they relate to the job assignment is also necessary. Skills and Competencies To succeed in this role, you will need to possess a range of skills and competencies, including: Strong knowledge of special education principles, practices, and procedures. Ability to develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) and behavior intervention plans (BIPs). Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with students, parents, and colleagues. Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple responsibilities. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive information with discretion. Proficiency in using technology, including Google Suite, student information systems, and other educational software.
