Experienced Structural Engineer Needed
Seeking experienced Structural Engineer (PE preferred or equivalent international license) for freelance/contract work supporting owner’s representation on greenfield/large-scale industrial/commercial projects (e.g., data centers, logistics, manufacturing facilities using Pre-Engineered Metal Buildings – PEMB). Focus: Perform conceptual structural designs/layouts and manage PEMB scope, including negotiating requirements with PEMB suppliers/manufacturers to optimize performance, cost, and constructability. Global projects using US standards (ASCE 7, IBC, AISC, ACI, MBMA guidelines, seismic/wind loads, etc.) unless specified otherwise. Immediate needs: •Large greenfield project in Argentina (urgent – start now) • Texas project (need help managing/driving structural/PEMB design forward) Key Capabilities Required (conceptual level using tools like ETABS, SAFE, RAM, Revit, or similar): • Structural feasibility assessments (geotech review, loads, site constraints, seismic/wind zones) • Conceptual framing/foundation systems (steel/concrete/composite, high-load floors, vibration control) • Preliminary PEMB concepts: framing layouts, load paths, redundancy for mission-critical • Identify risks (drift/deflection limits, differential settlement, high point loads) & mitigation • Produce conceptual drawings, diagrams, narratives, preliminary sizing & cost estimates PEMB-Specific Expertise & Owner’s Rep Support (Critical): • Proven experience managing PEMB design processes (from preliminary anchor bolt reactions to final shop drawings) • Working directly with PEMB suppliers/manufacturers (e.g., Butler, Nucor, or equivalents) to negotiate requirements – including drift/deflection criteria, load combos, custom features, interface details (foundation reactions, openings), certifications (IAS/MBMA), and value engineering to avoid over-design or "race to the bottom" issues • Direct/manage Designer of Record (DoR) and PEMB vendors during detailed phases • Peer review final PEMB packages (framing, connections, foundations) for alignment with owner intent, US standards, constructability, budget & schedule • Provide input for supplier selection, bid docs, & early construction planning Required Qualifications: • BS (or higher) in Structural/Civil Engineering • 7+ years structural design experience, with strong emphasis on PEMB projects (industrial/greenfield preferred; data centers or heavy-load facilities a plus) • Hands-on experience negotiating with PEMB suppliers for optimized specs, cost savings, and risk mitigation • Proficient in structural analysis software (ETABS, SAFE, RAM, RISA essential); BIM/Revit experience • Deep knowledge of US codes/standards (including MBMA common practices for PEMB) • Experience managing external designers/vendors/contractors • Strong communication; independent on fast-paced global projects • English/Spanish bilingual a plus (Argentina project) Project Details: • Freelance/hourly or milestone-based • Workload: 15–25 hrs/week for first 12 weeks, then 5–10 hrs/week for 3–5 months • Remote OK; occasional site visits possible (reimbursed) • Potential to convert to full-time if strong mutual interest, performance & cultural fit • Ongoing projects possible for top performers To Apply, Please Include: • Software proficiency • Immediate availability • Hourly rate expectation Portfolio/examples of conceptual structural/PEMB plans, negotiation outcomes & design management welcome.
