Job Overview: Teaching Support Manager We are seeking an exceptional Teaching Support Manager to join our team in the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics. This role is pivotal in supporting the undergraduate labs, ensuring the smooth operation of our educational programs, and contributing to the department's mission of excellence in teaching and research. The ideal candidate will be a creative, resourceful, and proactive professional with a strong background in STEM education, preferably with experience in laboratory management and educational innovation. Key Responsibilities Design, construct, and maintain undergraduate labs each quarter, including preparing lab manuals, developing new labs, and revising existing ones. Collaborate with faculty instructors to develop and support lecture demonstrations, ensuring alignment with course content and objectives. Define resource and operational objectives for teaching laboratories and lecture demonstration facilities, striving for efficiency and effectiveness. Train and manage graduate and undergraduate teaching assistants, including scheduling lab sections, training in lab safety protocols, and providing pedagogical support. Maintain laboratory equipment, such as radio telescopes, optical telescopes, heliostats, and CMB detectors, ensuring proper functioning and safety. Update Canvas course sites with lab assignments and grading tools, and maintain an online repository of developed lab projects with implementation notes. Provide pedagogical support to faculty and teaching assistants, including collaborating on course redesign and conceptualization of new labs. Manage the teaching laboratory/facility budget, determining needed instrumentation and instructional materials, and overseeing maintenance and ordering of equipment and supplies. Stay current with relevant astronomy and physics education research, applying best practices to continuously improve our educational offerings. Participate in departmental/divisional committees focused on curricular matters, contributing to the development of our academic programs. Essential Qualifications A college or university degree in a related field (e.g., physics, astronomy, education). 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline, with a strong foundation in laboratory management, educational support, or a similar field. Preferred Qualifications Master's Degree or higher in physics or a related discipline, demonstrating advanced knowledge and expertise. Prior work experience in a laboratory-based academic setting, with direct experience in developing and teaching labs, and supervising undergraduate and/or graduate students. Knowledge of and experience with research-based STEM teaching practices, and proficiency in Python or another programming language. Background in experimental science, with experience in astronomical observations and instruments, and a strong understanding of laboratory safety protocols. Skills and Competencies High level of technical skill and physics knowledge, with the ability to apply this expertise in a practical, educational setting. Strong programming background, with proficiency in languages such as Python, and experience with data analysis and visualization tools. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively collaborate with faculty, students, and staff from diverse backgrounds. Ability to work with minimal supervision, prioritizing tasks and managing multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced environment. Organized and detail-oriented, with a strong commitment to safety, quality, and customer service.
