Hardware Engineer Needed for Innovative Computer Input Device Development
I am seeking an experienced hardware engineer to help architect and prototype a new type of computer input device. A provisional patent has been filed, and full design details will be provided after signing an NDA. This project involves designing a compact embedded system combining: • A microcontroller (USB-HID + optional BLE/WiFi) • Onboard non-volatile memory • Secure data handling • Simple onboard user controls • Power management (USB-powered, optional battery) • USB and/or wireless communication interface This is Phase 1 of the prototype. Your job is to define the optimal hardware architecture and produce foundational design work including: RESPONSIBILITIES: • Recommend microcontroller + memory configuration • Define full hardware architecture • Provide component part list (BOM) • Review and refine system constraints • Outline firmware interaction • Provide PCB guidance (PCB work optional for later phase) • Estimate prototype cost and timeline REQUIRED EXPERIENCE: • STM32, ESP32, RP2040, nRF52, or similar MCU families • USB-HID device experience • Embedded systems architecture • Power subsystem design • Flash memory integration • Prototype board bring-up • Debug tools (JTAG/SWD, logic analyzer, oscilloscope) BONUS: • BLE HID experience • Consumer electronics • Rapid prototyping • Strong documentation skills PHASES: Phase 1 — Architecture (this posting) Phase 2 — Schematic + PCB Phase 3 — Firmware Phase 4 — Prototype manufacturing SCREENING QUESTIONS: (Include in Upwork’s screening section) 1. Which microcontroller would you choose for a USB-HID device and why? 2. What is the most similar device you’ve built? 3. Do you have USB/BLE HID experience? Examples? 4. Are you able to sign an NDA before receiving details? 5. Estimated timeline for Phase 1? Only apply if you have real embedded hardware experience. Apply tot his job
