About the Role: Intermediate Site Reliability Engineer, Database Operations We're seeking an experienced Intermediate Site Reliability Engineer, Database Operations to join our team of experts in ensuring the smooth operation of our user-facing services and production systems. As a Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) at GitLab, you will be responsible for applying sound engineering principles, operational discipline, and mature automation to our environments and the GitLab codebase. Your expertise in database operations, particularly with PostgreSQL, will be crucial in driving the success of our Database Reliability Engineering team. Key Responsibilities: Build: Automate every operational task, including package updates, configuration changes, and tools for automatic provisioning of customer-facing services, to ensure seamless operations across all customer platforms. Maintain: Develop a robust warning system and reliable maintenance tasks, such as library upgrades, version migrations, and similar, to ensure the continuous health of our systems. Plan: Design and implement monitoring and alerting systems that predict capacity needs based on customer usage patterns, plan for new service rollouts, and prepare advice for customers to optimize their resource consumption. Respond: Respond to user emergencies, platform alerts, and support requests in a timely and effective manner, ensuring minimal disruption to our services. Enhance: Implement new and update existing security measures to protect GitLab's infrastructure, ensuring the highest level of security and compliance. Partner: Act as a Subject Matter Expert within the GitLab Infrastructure team, interacting with internal and external compliance assessors during certification and recertification of regulatory requirements. Collaborate: Work closely with other engineering stakeholders to resolve larger architectural bottlenecks, participate in shaping the future roadmap, and establish strong operational readiness across teams. The Database Reliability Engineer Role As a Database Reliability Engineer at GitLab, you will be responsible for the building, running, and ownership of the entire lifecycle of the PostgreSQL database engine for GitLab.com. You will work closely with the DBRE team to ensure the scalability, security, and performance of our database infrastructure. The Team and Our Culture Our DBRE team currently consists of three members distributed across EMEA, APAC, and AMER. As a new member of the team, you can expect a supportive leadership team that plans to invest substantially in the DBRE team, adding over five SREs and DBREs over the next 12+ months. Essential Qualifications and Skills To be successful in this role, you will need: Advanced datastore platform management experience, preferably using Postgres at scale. Advanced Cloud Infrastructure management experience, preferably using GCP. Advanced experience with Linux. Solid experience with automation at scale using one or more of the following: Terraform, Chef, Ansible, or similar tools. Solid experience implementing monitoring at scale, preferably using Prometheus and Grafana. Superior verbal and written communication skills. Ability to work asynchronously across time zones and cultures, at the speed and scale of business. Preferred Qualifications and Skills While not essential, the following skills and qualifications are highly desirable: Experience with PostgreSQL database administration and performance optimization. Knowledge of containerization using Docker and Kubernetes. Familiarity with GitLab's products and services. Experience with agile development methodologies and version control systems such as Git. Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex issues.
