About the Firm We are a growing, plaintiff-side class action law firm headquartered in Puerto Rico with a nationwide practice. Our work focuses on complex, high-impact consumer class actions, including data breach, deceptive marketing, and defective product matters. The firm operates on a contingency-fee model and manages significant trust activity, settlements, and cost recovery across matters. As the firm continues to scale, we are strengthening our financial infrastructure to ensure accuracy, compliance, and clarity at every level. We are seeking a Financial Controller to provide experienced oversight, controls, and structure across our financial operations. This role is designed for a seasoned professional who understands how law firms operate, is comfortable working in a regulated, trust-heavy environment, and can operate at a high level without being embedded in day-to-day bookkeeping. About the Role The Financial Controller will oversee the firm’s financial operations at a supervisory and strategic level. This role is not responsible for daily bookkeeping. Instead, the Controller will review, validate, and strengthen the work produced by the bookkeeping team and external CPA, ensuring accuracy, consistency, compliance, and scalability as the firm grows. You will work closely with firm leadership, bookkeeping, settlement administration, and outside professionals to ensure that financial information is reliable, well-controlled, and useful for decision-making. Familiarity with Puerto Rico business requirements is essential, and experience with Act 60 considerations is a strong plus. There is long-term growth potential as the firm continues to expand. Key Responsibilities Financial Oversight & Controls • Oversee monthly and year-end close processes • Review and validate financial statements prepared • Ensure accuracy of the general ledger and chart of accounts • Establish and maintain internal accounting controls and procedures • Serve as the firm’s internal financial quality-control layer Trust & Settlement Oversight • Review trust (IOLTA) activity and reconciliations for compliance • Oversee settlement accounting and fee/cost calculations • Ensure proper tracking of client funds, co-counsel splits, and cost recovery • Confirm accurate trust-to-operating transfers • Assist in building standardized settlement workflows and review checklists Systems & Reporting • Help refine matter-level cost tracking and reporting • Support accrual-style financial reporting and forecasting as the firm grows • Assist with financial reporting used for leadership decision-making • Review and validate financial statements prepared • Ensure accuracy of the general ledger and chart of accounts • Establish and maintain internal accounting controls and procedures • Serve as the firm’s internal financial quality-control layer Qualifications Required: • Resides in Puerto Rico • Knowledge of Puerto Rico business rules and compliance • Experience working with law firms (plaintiff-side preferred) • Strong understanding of trust/IOLTA accounting • Experience with QuickBooks Online • Familiarity with Clio or similar legal practice management systems • Strong understanding of internal controls and month-end close • High attention to detail and comfort working in regulated environments Preferred: • Prior Controller or senior accounting experience • Experience with contingency-fee or project-based accounting • Exposure to Act 60 tax incentives and compliance Laukaitis Law is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
