Position: Part-Time Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CCDL) Part‑Time Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CCDL) Location 2300 Delaware Avenue (Colligan Clinical Diagnostic Laboratory), Westside Research Park, Santa Cruz, CA Job Summary The CLS performs high‑complexity molecular diagnostics for the Treehouse CARE assay (Illumina RNA sequencing). Work follows validated SOPs, the Laboratory Information System (LIS), and all applicable regulations (CDPH, CLIA, CAP). Appointment Information • Budgeted Salary: $42.63 – $50.96/hour • Benefits Level: Core benefits • Schedule: Part‑time, Variable – 50% (20 hrs per week), Monday to Friday (days to be discussed) • Job End Date: 5 months from hire date, with possibility of extension • Travel: Up to 25% of the time • Union Representation: HX Union Job Duties Performance of Diagnostic Tests and Assay Development (40%) • Perform in‑house testing with required quality controls and documentation. • Validate new assays and document results. • Discuss procedures and technical results with clinicians. • Explain test procedures to patients when requested. • Follow precautions for blood‑borne pathogens. Laboratory Operations Support (25%) • Prepare and maintain laboratory forms, logs, and records. • Monitor inventories and initiate orders. • Perform daily equipment and temperature checks; make minor repairs. • Serve as liaison with state labs, vendors, and campus purchasing. • Serve as contact for test pricing and contract discussions. Quality Control and Compliance (20%) • Perform quality control for all testing per federal and state regulations. • Follow up on abnormal in‑house results and discuss options with staff. • Meet performance standards for external evaluations and proficiency testing programs. Results, Statistics, and Billing (10%) • Enter and verify results in LIS. • Analyze and summarize validation results. • Maintain required logs and statistics. Miscellaneous (5%) • Participate in long‑range planning and special projects. • Help manage biological and hazardous waste storage. • Route laboratory mail to appropriate personnel. Required Qualifications • Current California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license (generalist or limited CGMBS) in good standing. • Prior molecular biology laboratory experience (PCR, nucleic acid extraction, electrophoresis). • Knowledge of universal precautions and blood‑borne pathogen standards. • Proficiency with LIS, electronic medical records, word processing, spreadsheets. • Ability to safely operate laboratory and safety equipment. • Excellent written and oral communication skills. • Ability to work collaboratively with clinicians and staff with minimal supervision. • Strong organization and time‑management skills. • Discretion and tact in handling confidential situations. • Positive, cooperative approach with staff, patients, and families. Preferred Qualifications • Experience with RNA assays. • Illumina sequencing experience. • Experience with secure cloud data transfer or analysis workflows. Special Conditions of Employment • Pass a pre‑employment criminal background check. • Pass the employment misconduct disclosure process. • Work long periods at a computer; perform light to moderate lifting up to 60 lbs. • Work primarily on campus; remote work possible per operational needs. • Work a variable schedule and occasional overtime. • Respond to after‑hours emergencies as needed. • Complete HIPAA training within 30 days of hire. • Work safely with hazardous materials; wear proper safety attire. • Read signs and follow labels in English; read MSDS. • Travel to multiple work locations on and off campus. • Complete required UC compliance training within designated time frames. • Comply with the University of California vaccination policy. • Report child abuse or neglect per CANRA; sign required statement.
