Role Overview As a Student Assistance Counselor, you will design and deliver data-driven school counseling services aligned with the district mission and ASCA standards. You will work closely with teachers, staff, and families to identify and support students exhibiting high-risk behaviors, such as chemical use, truancy, and mental health concerns. Your goal will be to provide prevention and intervention services that empower students to overcome challenges and achieve academic success. Key Responsibilities: • Conduct chemical pre-assessments with students as needed and participate in building student assistance teams. • Meet with students referred by building student assistance teams and provide one-to-one counseling and support groups. • Offer family consultation and support as necessary, and collaborate with community agencies to provide services to students and their families. • Develop and implement prevention programs, such as peer leadership groups, peer tutoring, and mentor programs. • Advocate for individual students and participate in planning and teaching of career education. • Counsel students individually and in small groups about personal concerns, and maintain contact and communication with guardians/caregivers. • Refer students and guardians/caregivers to appropriate specialists, special programs, and/or community agencies. • Consult with teachers, staff, and guardians/caregivers regarding the needs of individual students. Requirements and Qualifications Essential Qualifications: • Bachelor's degree required. • Minnesota Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC) and a valid MN PELSB license in school counseling, school social work, or school psychology. • If not currently licensed, must be willing and eligible to apply for and receive a Tier 2 license. Preferred Qualifications: • Experience working with truant and/or high-risk youth. • Knowledge of current counseling theories and practices, including individual and group counseling and prevention best practices. • Familiarity with community resources for youth and families. Skills and Competencies: • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in written form. • Strong planning and organizational skills. • Ability to assess chemical concerns in students. • Knowledge of dynamics of chemical use, abuse, and dependency and its effects on individuals, families, and peers.
