We invite applications for one or more Research Scientists to join our mineral resources and bedrock geology team. This is an exciting opportunity for a field-oriented geologist interested in conducting geologic mapping. The successful candidate will contribute expertise in one or more of the following subdisciplines: igneous/metamorphic petrology, physical volcanology, structural geology, economic geology, geochronology, geochemistry, or regional geology. The new Research Scientist will participate in the AZGS geologic mapping program jointly funded by the AZGS and the USGS through the STATEMAP program. The AZGS geologic mapping program takes advantage of Arizonaâ s long field season (October to May) with the summer months focused on map compilation, report writing, and sample analysis. Staff typically participate in additional projects based on research expertise and project needs. Key technical skills for a successful candidate include the ability to conduct geologic mapping (including structural and stratigraphic analysis), interpret diverse dataset such borehole data, geo/thermochronologic results, and geochemistry, and synthesize information in a GIS environment. The successful candidate will be a scientist who has strong interpersonal skills, can work collaboratively, and can communicate their science effectively with other researchers, public and private stakeholders, and members of the public to further our understanding of Arizonaâ s natural resources. AZGS staff scientists are expected to participate in AZGS field investigations, develop and write proposals, and conduct office-based data compilations, that will lead to the production of high-quality datasets, maps, reports, scientific papers, and presentations. Duties & Responsibilities • Conduct solo and team bedrock geologic mapping projects as part of the STATEMAP program (sometimes in remote locations) • Contribute to all stages of the geologic mapping lifecycle, including planning, fieldwork, GIS compilation, and publication of maps and their associated reports • Contribute to and lead scientific projects that complement AZGSâ s mission • Conceive and write proposals for external funding with internal and external partners • Develop and foster collaborative relationships with AZGS scientists, UA researchers, private-sector industries, regulatory agencies, stakeholders, AZ tribes, and other academic institutions • Ability to communicate with staff of varying technical knowledge and with non-scientific stakeholders • Strong written communication and analytical skills • Author peer-reviewed scientific papers and publications Minimum Qualifications • Masters and 3+ years experience • Experience conducting independent geologic mapping • Ability to drive according to the University .
