VP Engineering / Head of Engineering

Remote, USA Full-time
Veritec AI | Houston, TX (On-site) About Veritec AI Veritec AI develops AI-powered document processing solutions for legal and medical professionals. Our flagship products—FileFlow and LitHub—help organizations transform complex documents into actionable intelligence. We're a growing B2B SaaS company solving real problems in regulated industries where accuracy and reliability are paramount. About the Role We're looking for a Head of Engineering to lead our technical team and drive the development of our AI-powered platform. This is a hands-on leadership role—you'll be writing code, debugging production issues, and building features alongside your team, not just managing from a distance. You'll own the engineering organization, technical architecture, and product delivery while working closely with the CEO to execute on company strategy. This role requires relocation to Houston, TX. Our Environment This is a high-intensity startup environment. We move fast, wear multiple hats, and do whatever it takes to ship products and serve our customers. We're building AI solutions in regulated industries where accuracy matters and deadlines are real. This isn't a role where you'll delegate everything and attend meetings all day. You'll be in the code, solving hard problems, and making things happen. If you thrive under pressure, get energy from building, and want to have outsized impact—keep reading. If you're looking for a slower pace or purely strategic role, this isn't the right fit. What You'll Do • Write code daily—this is a player-coach role where you'll be hands-on with architecture, features, and firefighting production issues • Lead and grow the engineering team, establishing processes and culture that balance speed with quality • Own technical architecture decisions across our document processing, AI/ML, and cloud infrastructure • Drive product development for FileFlow (legal document processing) and Lit Hub • Jump into whatever needs doing—database optimization, API integrations, deployment pipelines, customer escalations • Ensure platform reliability, security, and compliance with HIPAA, SOC2, and enterprise requirements • Optimize AI accuracy and performance for document extraction, OCR, and intelligent processing workflows • Collaborate directly with the CEO on roadmap, resourcing, and strategic technical decisions • Manage cloud infrastructure (Azure) and vendor relationships What We're Looking For • 8+ years of software engineering experience, with 3+ years leading engineering teams • You still love to code and can't imagine a role where you're not building • Experience building and scaling B2B SaaS products, ideally in regulated industries (legal, healthcare, insurance) • Strong background in AI/ML applications, particularly document processing, NLP, or computer vision • Hands-on technical skills with modern cloud architecture (Azure and/or GCP preferred) • Track record of shipping products that meet enterprise security and compliance requirements • Thrives in ambiguity—comfortable making decisions with incomplete information and course-correcting as needed • Experience with OCR, document intelligence APIs, and vector databases • High ownership mentality: you see a problem, you fix it, you don't wait for permission • Excellent communication skills and ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders • Willingness to relocate to Houston, TX Nice to Have • Background in legal tech or healthcare technology • Familiarity with SOC2 compliance and HIPAA requirements • Previous experience at early-stage startups What We Offer • Competitive salary and equity • Opportunity to shape the technical direction of a growing AI company • Direct collaboration with company leadership • Relocation assistance to Houston Apply tot his job
