Fractional CTO / Technical Lead for IoT, Web, Mobile, and PWA

Overview We are building a connected IoT system for motorsports that includes: 1. Embedded firmware on custom hardware 2. Cloud backend with real-time communication 3. A web application (currently desktop-focused) 4. A mobile app currently in production 5. An ongoing evaluation of PWA vs native mobile strategy going forward We have working hardware in the field, a live backend, and active customers. This is not a greenfield project — the focus is on strengthening architecture, improving execution, and moving our next releases to production. We are looking for a fractional CTO / technical lead who can take ownership of technical direction, guide the system forward, and contribute hands-on where needed. This is a player-coach role, not a pure advisory position. What you'll do: 1. Own and guide end-to-end technical architecture: Firmware ↔ backend ↔ web ↔ mobile integration 3. Review and guide work from existing engineers and contractors 4. Help define a clear mobile strategy, support roadmap (native vs PWA, migration paths, tradeoffs) 5. Improve and stabilize the existing mobile app 6. Establish clean API contracts, deployment patterns, and documentation 7. Perform hands-on development for complex or high-risk areas 8. Improve release quality, stability, and maintainability 9. Help evaluate future developers or agencies What We’re Looking For: Required: Experience owning production systems end-to-end Strong backend experience (real-time systems, APIs, WebSockets or similar) Frontend experience (React or similar) Mobile app experience (iOS/Android, React Native, or similar) Hands-on experience with IoT or hardware-connected products Ability to both write code and review code Comfortable making tradeoffs and explaining them clearly Strong Plus: PWA experience (especially consolidating web + mobile) Experience with BLE, MQTT, or device management systems Experience stabilizing or refactoring existing mobile apps Experience working with small teams and early-stage products Prior fractional CTO or lead engineer experience What This Is NOT: Not a pure strategy or advisory role Not a “rebuild everything” exercise Not a junior developer position Not a high-ceremony enterprise environment How to Apply Please include: A brief description of a system you owned end-to-end Your experience with mobile apps and hardware-connected systems Applications that don’t address these points will be ignored.
