Payroll Tax Accountant
About the position We are seeking an experienced Payroll Tax Accountant for a consulting engagement lasting 3-4 months. This hybrid role can be based in either Tampa Bay, FL, or New York City, NY. The ideal candidate must have extensive experience with payroll tax amendments and MasterTax software and will be responsible for ensuring compliance and accuracy in tax filings. Responsibilities • Adhere to and maintain Tax Amendment Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), ensuring compliance with service level agreements (SLAs). • Prepare, file, and amend payroll tax returns, including W2Cs and 1099s (NEC and MISC), across all federal, state, and local jurisdictions using MasterTax. • Backfile payroll tax returns as necessary based on client-provided information. • Conduct research, resolve tax issues, and follow up with taxing jurisdictions and internal teams related to amended tax returns. • Identify trends in payroll tax inquiries and escalate for engineering intervention when needed. • Utilize knowledge of R D, Employee Retention Tax Credit (ERTC), and other payroll tax credits to ensure accurate tax amendments. • Collaborate with key stakeholders to improve payroll tax processes and procedures. • Assist in training new team members and provide progress reports to direct managers. • Perform other payroll tax-related duties as assigned. Requirements • Minimum 2+ years of hands-on experience with payroll tax amendments in a multi-state environment. • MasterTax experience is REQUIRED. • Strong written and verbal communication skills. • Ability to be process-driven, resourceful, and adaptable. • Proficient in multiple software programs and tax systems. • Experience managing multi-state accounts for either a single large employer or a large multi-employer organization. • Prior experience working in a payroll service provider environment. • Tax filing and deposit experience required. • Customer service experience working with payroll or tax clients. • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
