The Senior Industrial Hygienist Apprenticeship involves inspecting work sites for compliance with safety standards and identifying health hazards, as well as conducting training and enforcing regulations. Responsibilities Inspect work sites to determine compliance with state and federal standards/guidelines and to identify health violations/hazards Identify hazards such as noise and vibrations, light of various types, and other physical energies including electromagnetic emissions Confer with management and employee representatives and/or take appropriate enforcement or consultation expectation based upon the results of field testing and/or laboratory analyses Issue notices of violations and may be expected to enforce state and federal laws Conduct training for appropriate staff or public and private sector employers and employees Use a computer in the performance of these duties Skills Bachelor's or higher degree in audiology, bacteriology, biochemistry, biological science, biology, biophysics, biostatistics, chemical engineering, chemistry, community health, environmental biology, environmental engineering, environmental health, environmental planning, environmental toxicology, epidemiology, genetics, geochemistry, health physics, human development, hydrology, industrial hygiene, medical science, medical technology, molecular biology, nursing, occupational health, petroleum engineering, physics, public health, or toxicology; including or supplemented by eight semester credit hours in chemistry Bachelor's or higher degree in audiology, bacteriology, biochemistry, biological science, biology, biophysics, biostatistics, chemical engineering, chemistry, community health, environmental biology, environmental engineering, environmental health, environmental planning, environmental toxicology, epidemiology, genetics, geochemistry, health physics, human development, hydrology, industrial hygiene, medical science, medical technology, molecular biology, nursing, occupational health, petroleum engineering, physics, public health, or toxicology; including or supplemented by eight semester credit hours in chemistry; and one year of industrial hygiene experience Your degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education If your degree was awarded by an educational institution outside the United States or its territories, you must provide independent verification of equivalency Candidates are responsible for the evaluation fee Industrial Hygiene experience is defined as anticipation, recognition, evaluation, and control of workplace hazards. This includes, but is not limited to quantifying hazards, identifying risks, sampling and measuring environmental stressors such as chemical or physical agents Working with employer interpreting standards, discussing abatement measures, and recommending controls Training employees on safety protocols A medical examination will be required prior to appointment, and you are responsible for payment of the clinical laboratory test fee This position may require a fingerprint background check prior to appointment Position specific job duties may include occasional altered work schedule or job assignments which require availability and willingness to work occasional evenings and/or out-stationed assignments Candidates with no previous state service will begin at the starting rate of the salary range listed above As this position requires travel, the appointee must have a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State and have a motor vehicle or otherwise demonstrate their capacity to meet the transportation needs of the position Employment at the Department of Labor is contingent upon the maintenance of a valid work authorization and necessary documentation to work legally in the United States Ability to initiate and maintain relationships across a diverse set of stakeholders Benefits 13 paid holidays, 5 personal days, and a minimum of 13 vacation days per year Paid sick leave (CSEA and PEF employees- 13 days; M/C employees- 8 days plus free enrollment into the Income Protection Program for short-term and long-term disability coverage) Choice of several affordable and competitive health insurance plans Dental and vision insurance plans at no additional cost Membership in the NYS Employee’s Retirement System NYS Deferred Compensation Investment Plan Eligibility to apply for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) (full-time employees) Eligibility to apply for tuition reimbursement for qualifying employees and courses Paid Parental Leave Company Overview The New York State Department of Labor (DOL or NYSDOL) is the department of the New York state government that enforces labor law.
