ABOUT THE JOB Peak Design has traditionally made both hard goods and soft goods (think tripods and backpacks) and recently has made its first foray into electronics as part of our mobile ecosystem. Custom bag hardware is a key part of our secret sauce for soft goods and we are currently looking for a soft goods hardware designer. In 2015 we released the world's most successful Messenger Bag with an iconic main closure hardware design called MagLatch. This magnetic latching system provided quick access, expansion, beautiful industrial design, and served as the centerpiece of the bag's function and aesthetics. It spoke to Peak Design's roots in hardware design and showed off an attention to detail and design intent that permeated every carefully-considered feature of the bag. We continue to custom-design every piece of hardware on our bags -- this has become part of the Peak Design DNA. We now have over 100 pieces of custom hardware in production and are facing our most challenging design requirements yet in our upcoming line of Outdoors/Adventure bags. This Soft Goods Hardware Designer role will be responsible for designing the next generation of hardware, latches, and mechanisms like MagLatch to continue pushing our bags to the top of the pack. Pun intended. What You'll Do: Design 3D parts or multi-body assemblies - Use CAD modeling software - Use modeling software (Fusion + Onshape) Prototype parts - 3D print parts in house - Work with vendors overseas for rapid prototyping Construct soft good subassemblies to evaluate hardware designs - Hand and laser cutting materials - Sew and bond materials together Test hardware strength and/or performance - Inspect part dimensions - Utilize standard test methods - Create a new test methods - Establish standardized testing procedures Create engineering drawings - Identify critical dimensions - Set appropriate inspection tolerances Create QC documentation - IQC - OQC - IPQC - FQC Work with overseas vendors - Vendor communication via Email, Slack, Skype, Zoom - DFM reviews - Tooling CAD review - Travel to China and Vietnam ABOUT YOU • Experience owning mechanical parts and assemblies from prototyping through mass production for high-volume products that have successfully shipped to customers. • Highly effective at creating mechanical mechanisms 3D models in any major 3D CAD system. Bonus points for direct Onshape experience (we recently transitioned from Solidworks to Onshape). • Strong desire for hands-on prototyping. You love to create actual functioning prototypes and products, not just design them virtually. You use a combination of 3D printing, off-the-shelf components, prototype CNC shops, and our own workshop tools. • Strong industrial design background, having the ability to make beautiful functional designs. • Manufacturing process knowledge - CNC milling, die casting, injection molding, stamping, extrusion, and assembly. • Familiarity with various surface finishes, anodization, powder coating, painting, and plating. • Familiarity with basic materials properties: aluminum alloys, steels, rubbers, and plastics. • Familiarity with phase-gates manufacturing systems (Proto, EVT, DVT, PVT, Mass Production). • Previous travel to China or Vietnam and vendor management: Experience bringing up a manufacturing line and problem-solving in-person from EVT through MP. Working knowledge of supply chain structure and ability to navigate business and interpersonal relations between suppliers, sub-suppliers, contract manufacturers, and customers. Confidence in delegating tasks and the ability to inspire quick action on tough problems. • You're local to the San Francisco Bay Area (or willing to relocate for this role) and excited to work from our office/workshop in the Dogpatch a minimum of 2-3 days per week. These are not remote roles. • Willing and eager to travel to China or other parts of Asia to visit our suppliers 1-4 times per year. • The ability to focus and thrive in a distracting, highly social office environment. • 3+ years of experience. COMPENSATION When we find the right candidate, we strive to extend an offer that's exciting and competitive. The base compensation (i.e. salary) for this role is targeted between $120,000 - $160,000 USD, with the distribution between salary and company equity options at the employee's discretion. Final offer amounts are determined by multiple factors and may vary from the amounts listed above. Total compensation packages also include an annual profit share percentage, and our benefits package as described below.
