[adinserter block="1"] Job title: Transitional School Adjustment Counselor Company: Springfield Public Schools [adinserter block="1"] Job description: THE POSITION: The McKinney-Vento Act requires school adjustment/school counselors to support students experiencing homelessness. School adjustment/school counselors contribute to the overall success of students experiencing homelessness by removing the barriers faced by those students. Within the Student Assignment Services team, the Family Transition School Adjustment Counselor will work in partnership with school staff and community partners to support students and their families who are in periods of transition, such as those experiencing homelessness and unaccompanied youth. Utilizing leadership, advocacy, and collaboration, the Family Transition School Adjustment Counselor will promote student growth and achievement by providing services that strengthen home, school, and community partnerships and eliminate barriers to school and life/postsecondary success. RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES: * Reports to the Chief of Student Assignment Services (SAS) working in conjunction with the Executive Officer for Student Services. Collaborates with the SAS McKinney-Vento team and student support team to provide technical and compliance support to schools and community agencies regarding the education and support of children and youth experiencing homelessness. Coordinates with district Homeless Services Coordinator to develop and deliver programming and services for children and families in the populations served. Collaborates with the school-based school adjustment counselor, teachers, principals, and other student support personnel to provide direct services i.e., individual counseling and therapy. Organizes and facilitates a mentoring relationship with homeless children and youth. Transition homeless students and youth from grade to grade and level to level. Assures that children and youth experiencing homelessness will have stability in school and will receive specialized services when eligible. Collaborates with community agencies providing services to the populations served. Works collaboratively with school-based staff in supporting students experiencing homelessness in their postsecondary planning. Advocates in the community to reduce stigma towards children/families experiencing homelessness. Provides appropriate training and professional development relative to the education and support of children experiencing homelessness. Participates on district and community committees as required; attends and participates in professional groups and committees, as appropriate. Provides timely, accurate and responsive support to families, schools, programs, and other departments. Performs related duties as assigned by the Chief of Student Assignment Services PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY: * Maintain confidentiality. Maintain records consistent with ethical and legal guidelines. Perform responsibilities in an organized, accurate, timely and dependable manner. Operate within the federal and state laws and the established district and school procedures and policies. Provide support for other school and district programs and personnel. Attend district professional development and meetings. Keep informed of current professional trends. Utilizes computers effectively in the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities. Pursue professional growth. Complete other duties as assigned by the Chief of Student Assignment Services QUALIFICATIONS: * Master's Degree in Social Work or Counseling. Certification (Initial License) as a School Social Worker/School Adjustment Counselor by the Massachusetts Department of Education. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Knowledge of theoretical frameworks of intellectual, social, and emotional development. Familiarity with philosophy, principles, and practices in social work or counseling. Familiarity with mental health and emotional impairments including learning disorders affecting student achievement. Familiarity with prevention and treatment of substance abuse, physical and sexual abuse, and violence in students. Experience with crisis management and intervention. Knowledge of medical conditions and medication related to physical disabilities and learning disorders. Experience with a comprehensive school counseling program Familiarity with the role of a School Adjustment Counselor/School Social Worker in a Pre K - 12 educational setting. Familiarity with the American School Counselor Association Framework for School Counseling Programs. Two years of full time, paid, successful, and fully attested experience in the handling of children, including those below the age of 12, in an educational, childcare, social work or guidance setting. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally, a negligible amount of force frequently, and/or or constantly having to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. WORKING ENVIRONMENT This position requires employee be in an office or similar indoor environment. Employee is often exposed to individuals who are rude or irate and sometimes exposed to individuals with known violent backgrounds or communicable diseases.
