Job Summary As a Data Engineer at American Express, you will play a critical role in designing, building, and maintaining our card transaction systems on a distributed platform delivered in a hybrid cloud. You will work closely with senior engineers and other stakeholders to develop high-performance code, architect large-scale distributed data systems, and stay up-to-date with the latest industry trends and innovations. Key Responsibilities Design and build distributed data processing and analytical systems that meet the needs of our business stakeholders. Develop high-level designs and detailed plans for subsystems and features, with a focus on performant code. Collaborate with developers in daily exercises, assist with code reviews, and contribute to other SDLC tasks. Build Proof of Concepts (POCs) to validate new ideas and technologies. Stay current with industry-leading and innovative technologies and solutions, and apply this knowledge to build low-latency distributed systems. Foster a culture of innovation and experimentation, and be willing to take calculated risks to try new ideas. Work closely with peer technology and innovation teams across various areas. Essential Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field. 2+ years of work experience in programming design and execution using Java or Scala. Experience in data processing using Apache Kafka, Apache Cassandra, or Elasticsearch. Knowledge of designing, executing, and working with NoSQL databases like Cassandra, Elasticsearch. Preferred Qualifications Experience in distributed data processing and analyzing using Cassandra, Elasticsearch, Apache Kafka. Knowledge of distributed messaging systems like Kafka. Experience in building Microservices and Service Mesh. Familiarity with cloud platforms like Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift. Experience in Continuous Integration, Continuous Delivery, and DevOps Frameworks. Knowledge of architecting large-scale distributed data systems, considering scalability, reliability, security, performance, and adaptability. Clear understanding of different design patterns, threading, and memory models supported by the language/VM. Ability to coach and provide technical guidance to other architects. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to create and deliver effective presentations to senior leadership.
